Where Evangelism Begins

Wow, I love crepés. And don’t think I discriminate against the varying types of crepés either, because I don’t. I love breakfast crepés, lunch crepés, dinner crepés, and dessert crepés. Get the point?

What other food exists in such a way where you can have it for every meal and it never really be the same? Is there an example of food as majestic as the french crepé? And is there a better city to enjoy such deliciousness than Paris? I think not.

In 2019, I found myself enjoying both a delicious crepés and the city Paris herself, accompanied by my wonderful wife and children. It was a warm evening and the city was alive with people. People from all around the world flock to cities like Paris to chase after dreams, find love, and experience the stories for themselves.

While we were there for crepés, God was there for a young woman from Cameroon.

Let me confess something, I find evangelism to be scary. I know what you’re thinking, maybe I should have chosen to be something other than a missionary and pastor. You may be right, but just because I get nervous about it doesn’t mean I don’t do it or that I have lost understanding about how important it is.

What gets in my way of evangelizing to others is I often overthink the entire situation. When in reality, If we would be open to just encouraging someone and treating someone with kindness, it opens people up to so much more. My family experienced that first hand on the corner of a little crepé shop one evening Paris.

This is our favorite spot in Paris, we’ve returned on both trips to parents to eat these crepés, and truth be told I don’t even know the name of it. But as we sat there one evening we began to engage with the waitress who was serving us. She was a tall and beautiful young woman from Cameroon, Africa. She spoke great English and met us with a smile.

A few reasons come to mind. Most of the time, people are jerks to them. People usually don’t look them in the eye, ask them their name, and engage most when something is wrong. Since evangelism is probably going to go best if you are kind, a waitress or waiter presents amazing opportunities for you to practice kindness.

And you can’t deny that they also present a captive audience as well.

On this night, we just began to ask her about her life. If you want people to care about the story of God, set an example and begin to show that their story is important too. Evangelism isn’t just talking, it’s listening. We asked her where she was from, what she was doing in Paris, and if she liked crepés.

It was anything crazy, it was just a choice to engage. We invited her into our life and asked her about hers. Over the course of the night, she learned about who we were and what we were doing in France. We laughed as we tried to get her to come and sit with us and eat. Obviously, your server doesn’t usually sit with the people in the restaurant, but what might be more unusual for them is to actually be invited.

We stayed long enough to actually be there when it closed. Want to know something cool? She sat down and ate a crepé with us…and we prayed over her…and took this cool picture.

As we sat there that night I remember that the restaurant was playing American music, I usually can hear music I recognize from anywhere. In the same moment that I felt the Holy Spirit pushing us to encourage this girl and pray for her, I heard the song “You Say” by Lauren Daigle come through the speakers.

Great moment.

Here’s the key, here’s where evangelism begins. It begins at the choice to step into the reality that God wants to love people, and He just might want to use you.

It may just be kindness, it may be money, and both of those may lead to you sharing Jesus, but it starts with the choice to engage.

God is the power source behind the encounters with people, He’s there with us.

Evangelism begins with us deciding to look someone in the eyes and see them as God sees them. If we do that, we will have plenty of things to share, including our crepés.

Love this story! You never know when even a brief interaction with someone could lead to them having a powerful encounter with God! ??
